From NGO Empowerment to Mutual Reverence
In 2008, we established our NGO, FIRST Sansthan (Foundation for Integrated Research & Sustainable Development), with the aim of guiding, supporting, and empowering tribal communities living on the fringes of mainstream society.
Over time, we came to understand that the reality is quite the opposite: it is the tribal communities who have much to teach us about art, culture, craftsmanship, and our heritage.
A Millennia of Gemstone Craftsmanship
India has a remarkable and ancient tradition of gemstone and stone craftsmanship. The historic port of Cambay (now Khambhat) has been associated with the trade of gemstones and jewellery for thousands of years, including maritime trade with the Roman and Greek worlds. Similarly, the coastal regions of South India developed a rich tradition of exporting stone sculptures to countries across Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos.
What is particularly remarkable is that this traditional art is still very much alive. Thousands of skilled artisans continue to practice this craft, carrying generations of knowledge and artistic heritage forward.
Bridging Tradition with Modernity
While working closely with these artisans, however, we observed that they were often undervalued and inadequately rewarded for their craftsmanship. Limited access to modern tools and resources also made it difficult for them to achieve the fine detailing and finishing that their artistic abilities could produce. As a result, the final creations often failed to reflect the true potential of these highly skilled artists.
We therefore began this venture with a vision: to provide artisans with modern precision tools, better resources, and a larger international platform through which their art can be showcased and appreciated. We believe that with the right support, these craftsmen can create extraordinary works of art while preserving India’s rich cultural heritage.
As part of this initiative, we have imported 26 varieties of gemstones from Latin America, Africa, and Asia, giving our artisans access to a diverse range of exceptional natural materials.
