The NGO Genesis & Initiative

In 2008, we established our NGO, FIRST Sansthan (Foundation for Integrated Research & Sustainable Development), with the core mission of guiding, supporting, and empowering tribal communities living on the fringes of mainstream society.

The Wisdom of Tribal Artisans

Over time, we came to understand a profound truth: It is the tribal communities who have much to teach us about art, culture, natural stone dynamics, and our ancient heritage.

Their intuitive harmony with raw minerals and centuries of passed-down wisdom revealed that true preservation starts by honoring their artistic authority.

A Millennia of Gemstone Trade

India has a remarkable, ancient tradition of gemstone and stone craftsmanship. The historic port of Cambay (now Khambhat) has been associated with the trade of gemstones and jewellery for thousands of years, carrying out maritime commerce with the ancient Roman and Greek worlds.

Similarly, South Indian coastal sculptors exported stone art across Southeast Asia to Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos. Today, thousands of artisans preserve this active lineage.

Global Curation

Curating 26 Global Mineral Varieties

To complement India's rich indigenous lapidary heritage, our curatorial team directly imports 26 rare varieties of gemstones from Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

This unprecedented access provides our artisan guild with diverse natural minerals—ranging from vibrant amethyst geodes and jasper to optical quartz and fluorite—enabling museum-grade artistic expressions.

Equipping Artisans with Modern Precision

While working closely with traditional sculptors, we observed that lack of access to modern precision tools often restricted their ability to achieve the fine detailing, faceting, and interior light refractions their talent deserved.

We equipped our artisan studios with state-of-the-art diamond-head laser tools, high-precision lapidary cutters, and ergonomic carving gear—enabling craftspeople to transform massive mineral raw blocks into world-class sculptures while ensuring fair global appreciation.
